History of Copper

The first samples of copper products founded were belong to 8000BC. These products were first used as tools and arms, than as dishes, home products and accessories.

In Anatolia the copperwork has a history of 10.000 years. Excavations show that Çatalhöyük was a center of mining and production of copper.

During Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantium, Seljuk and Ottoman reigns, various workshops were established and specially during the reigns os Seljuk and Ottomans Copperwork reached its zeal due to mining facilities in Anatolia and Balkans.

In Anatolia casting, hammering, rolling, and pressing were popular techniques in copperwork. First raw copper was melted and casted into round or rectangular moulds which had 50 or 60 cm lenght. Then those moulded copper were hammered to make them thinner so they could be used for copperwork. However difficulty of thinnering them just by hammering created other technicques. They started using mills to make flat sheet of copper at various thickness at 18th century.

Nowadays, the copper sheets are shaped using either one of the hammering, rolling, casting or pressing techniques. Beside of traditionals there are other copperwork techniques such as engraving, embossing, punching, inlaying.
